Extended Information | BTMS is a vegetable derived emulsifier and conditioning agent which is widely used in hair conditioners and hair leave-in-products for its excellent wet combing, and detangling properties. BTMS is able to emulsify high levels of silicones, such as Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone, increasing the detangling properties and silky feel to products when used. It is also a great emulsifier for skin care products such as creams and lotions as it helps to soften the skin, leaving a soft non-greasy feel. It can be used in a wide variety of applications including creams, deep conditioning hair relaxers, hair conditioners and detanglers. Typically the recommended use is 1-5% in conditioner type formulas or up to 10% for more viscous emulsions. Because there is cetearyl alcohol in the product it will build viscosity the more you use. The quat will also increase the conditioning in the formula. A simple way to make a rinse-off hair conditioner using BTMS is to just add between 1% and 10% to water with an appropriate amount of preservative and you've got yourself a very nice conditioner. We'd suggest starting off with about 5% (which will give a 1.25% behentrimonium methosulfate) and work your way to up 10%, if you wish. EXAMPLE METHOD: To make approx 100ml of hair conditioner... Boil your water first, weigh 95g of boiling water into a heat-proof jug. Add 5g of BTMS and mix thoroughly, ideally with a stick blender for 2 minutes. Leave to cool until it is below 45 degC, then add any chosen fragrance or essential oil at max 1%, add your chosen preservative at recommended inclusion, leave to cool to room temperature, then bottle. INCI - Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Behentrimonium Methosulphate Product appearance: white-to-yellow pastels or pellets. Chemical description: Alkyltrimethylammonium Methyl Sulphate. |
